How to properly remove black mold from damp wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. The wall feels a bit damp to the touch, and I'm worried it might be spreading inside the wall itself. What's the best way to handle this properly without it coming back?

Black mold on a damp wall requires addressing both the visible growth and the hidden moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from AC units or a small, persistent leak.

First, identify and stop the water source. The dampness behind boxes suggests poor air circulation and condensation buildup, common in closets on exterior walls. Move all items away from the area and dry the surface completely with a fan before any cleaning begins.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a detergent solution (like diluted dish soap), not bleach. Bleach doesn't penetrate porous surfaces and can worsen indoor air quality. Dry the wall thoroughly immediately after cleaning.

However, since the wall feels damp and the mold was hidden, the growth inside the wall is likely more extensive. DIY cleaning only addresses the surface, and the mold will almost certainly return without resolving the core moisture issue.

For a recurring or suspected-hidden problem, a professional inspection is the proper course. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's condition. Remediation often involves controlled removal of affected drywall or insulation to prevent cross-contamination. Companies with their own microbiology labs can verify the species and confirm the cleanup was effective through post-remediation testing, which is crucial for health safety.
