How to properly remove black mold from humid villa walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe. It's been so humid lately that our windows are constantly fogged up in the morning. What's the best way to handle this properly? Should I just scrub it off with bleach or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

Scrubbing visible mold with bleach is a common but ineffective approach—it removes the surface discoloration but leaves the root structure intact, so it often returns within weeks. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with condensation on windows, the underlying moisture problem must be addressed first.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a vinegar solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since this is behind a wardrobe and spreading, the wall cavity likely has a more established colony. The persistent humidity indicates the room’s relative humidity is consistently above 60%, which is the primary fuel.

The proper method is to identify and stop the moisture source. This could be a small plumbing leak behind the wall, condensation from a cold bridge, or simply insufficient ventilation. In many Dubai villas, the constant AC use can create significant temperature differentials that lead to condensation inside walls.

For a case like yours, a professional inspection is advised to diagnose the moisture source accurately and assess the full extent. Remediation involves isolating the area, physically removing contaminated porous materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions. Simply cleaning the surface will not resolve it. After remediation, controlling humidity with a dehumidifier or ensuring your AC is properly sized and maintained is critical to prevent recurrence.
