How to properly remove black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the outside wall. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the best way to get rid of this properly, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can handle myself with products from ACE?

That black mold in your closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation that forms on cooler exterior walls. For a small, visible patch (under 1 square meter), you can often handle it yourself.

First, address the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the humid outside wall. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving a small gap between the wall and your clothes. A moisture absorber like silica gel can help in the enclosed space.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Instead, use a dedicated mold remover from a hardware store or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.

However, since you suspect it may be spreading behind the clothes, the wall cavity could be affected. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the patch is larger than one square meter, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls. Improper removal can disturb spores and spread the problem. A reputable company will provide lab-verified confirmation that the specific mold type has been addressed and the moisture source resolved.
