How to properly remove mold from bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It’s gotten worse since the weather got more humid, and I’m worried it’s making my allergies act up every morning. What’s the best way to handle this properly without damaging the walls?

The black spots spreading behind your wardrobe are a classic sign of a condensation issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity. The wardrobe traps moisture against the cooler wall, creating the perfect environment for mold. Your allergy flare-ups are a common reaction to the spores it's releasing.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover is more effective than bleach, which often only removes the color. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, since the mold has penetrated the wall and is recurring, this is likely a deeper issue.

The proper way to handle this requires addressing the source. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning. The wall itself may be damp from a small plumbing leak or, more commonly, persistent condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the wall. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and the extent of the growth, which can often spread inside the cavity.

Remediation involves isolating the area, physically removing the contaminated porous material (the affected plasterboard or paint), HEPA vacuuming, and treating the area with antimicrobial solutions. The final, critical step is to rectify the moisture problem, which may involve improving room ventilation, addressing AC condensation drip issues, or applying a thermal barrier to the wall to prevent future condensation. For a permanent solution, this comprehensive approach is necessary.
