How to quickly clean closet mold and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to feel really damp. I pulled out some winter clothes I stored a few months ago and found several jackets and sweaters covered in fuzzy black spots. I think the dehumidifier in that room might have been off for a while without me realizing. What's the fastest way to get this cleaned and stop it from coming back, and should I be worried about it spreading through the walls?

Black mold on clothes in a closet is almost always due to high humidity and lack of air circulation, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The damp feeling confirms a moisture problem, likely from the dehumidifier being off and the interior wall trapping humid air from the rest of the home.

For cleaning, remove all affected items immediately to prevent spores from dispersing. For washable fabrics like cotton sweaters, a hot wash with detergent can remove the mold. For dry-clean-only items like wool jackets, take them to a professional cleaner and inform them of the mold issue. Do not attempt to brush off the mold dry, as this releases spores into the air.

To address the closet itself, clean all surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning. The most critical step is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. Run your dehumidifier consistently, aiming to keep indoor humidity below 60%. Leave the closet doors open and consider using a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside it to improve air circulation and dryness.

The potential for spread into the walls depends on the duration and source of the moisture. If the dampness is solely from the indoor air and you've caught it early, the risk is lower. However, if the interior wall conceals a plumbing leak or is suffering from condensation due to poor insulation—a known issue with some building materials here—the mold could be growing within the wall cavity. A persistent damp smell or visible mold regrowth on the wall surface after cleaning are strong indicators of a hidden problem. For peace of mind, a professional inspection with a borescope can check inside the wall for growth without causing damage.
