How to quickly fix black mold in closet ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the back of our bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside of our villa in Jumeirah. It feels damp to the touch and the room has a weird, stale smell we can't get rid of, even with the AC running constantly. What's the fastest way to deal with this ourselves, and at what point do we absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on the description of black spots, persistent dampness, and a stale odor in your Jumeirah villa closet, you are likely dealing with a significant mold colony. The climate in Dubai, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates ideal conditions for condensation on cold surfaces, particularly exterior walls, which is a primary cause of this issue.

For a small, surface-level area (less than 10 square feet), immediate action is required. First, equip yourself with personal protective equipment: an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Isolate the area by sealing the closet with plastic sheeting. To kill the mold, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover; we do not recommend bleach as it does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Scrub the affected surfaces thoroughly. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried using fans and a dehumidifier; this is critical, as moisture is the root cause.

However, given that the wall feels damp to the touch and the smell persists despite AC use, this suggests a more serious, underlying moisture problem. The dampness likely originates from a condensation issue within the wall cavity or a potential hidden leak. Surface cleaning will be a temporary fix at best. The mold may have penetrated the drywall or insulation, which requires professional remediation.

At this point, you absolutely need a professional inspection. DIY methods cannot diagnose the hidden source of moisture, and improper handling can aerosolize toxic spores throughout your home. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause—whether it's interstitial condensation, a leak, or AC drain pan overflow—and prescribe the correct remediation protocol, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines. For a definitive solution and to safeguard your family's health, I strongly recommend you call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate assessment.
