How to quickly remove black mold from closet myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started to get these black speckles all over the back panel, and I just pulled out my winter jackets to find a few of them covered in the same stuff. We had that really heavy dew and humidity a couple of weeks ago, and I think the moisture got trapped in there. I'm in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm really worried it's spreading. What's the fastest way to deal with this myself before it gets worse?

Based on your description of black speckles on an exterior wall closet in an older Bur Dubai building following a period of high humidity, you are likely dealing with mold growth, specifically Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are common in our climate. The exterior wall is likely experiencing condensation due to the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For immediate, contained surface mold, you can attempt a careful DIY remediation. Safety is paramount. You must wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection to avoid spore inhalation and contact. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape to prevent spore dispersion.

Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem. Lightly mist the affected wooden panel and the jackets. Gently scrub the area with a microfiber cloth, being careful not to oversaturate the wood or spread spores. For the jackets, follow fabric care labels; most can be laundered in hot water with a non-chlorine, oxygen-based bleach. After cleaning, everything must be thoroughly dried. Use a dehumidifier or a fan in the room to reduce moisture levels immediately.

However, this is a temporary solution. The presence of mold on both the structure and contents indicates a persistent moisture issue within the wall cavity itself, likely requiring professional assessment. In the UAE, proper remediation involves identifying and eliminating the source of moisture, containing the affected area, and using HEPA filtration devices to clean the air. Given your building's age and location, a professional inspection is strongly advised to prevent systemic spread and potential health issues.
