How to quickly remove black mold from closet safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten much worse. What's the fastest way to deal with this safely so it doesn't spread to our clothes?

The fastest way is to address the moisture source first, then clean the mold. Since it's on an exterior wall, Dubai's high outdoor humidity is likely condensing on the cooler interior surface, creating the damp environment mold needs.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Do not use bleach. Mix a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or a dedicated mildew remover. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The wall must be bone dry to prevent regrowth.

Crucially, you must identify and stop the moisture. Check for any cracks in the exterior wall sealant where humid air could be entering. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and that the room is not being allowed to get humid when the AC is off. For closets on exterior walls, leaving a small gap for air circulation or using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel can help.

If the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster, or if the patch is larger than a square meter, professional assessment is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source and ensure it's remediated correctly to protect your health and belongings. In severe cases, simply wiping the surface won't address the root problem.
