How to quickly remove black mold from toddler's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler's bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while as my son has had a persistent cough for the last few months that gets worse at night. I'm really worried it's connected and that it might spread. What's the fastest and most effective way to deal with this to keep my family safe?

The fastest initial step is to isolate the area. Keep your toddler out of the room, close the closet door, and cover the opening with plastic sheeting if possible to prevent spores from dispersing into the living space. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water; avoid bleach as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces. Scrub gently with a stiff brush, wear an N95 mask and gloves, and ensure the room is well-ventilated.

However, given the location (a closet, which suggests poor air circulation) and the connection to your son's persistent cough, this is likely a symptom of a larger humidity issue. In Dubai's climate, the year-round AC use creates significant condensation, which is the primary driver for mould growth inside villas. Simply wiping the visible patch often misses the root cause and the mould will return.

For a child's room, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the moisture—often a small AC condensate drain leak inside the wall or poor insulation causing condensation. They will also perform air and tape-lift samples to be cultured in a lab; this is critical to identify the exact species of black mould and confirm if it is one of the types known to produce allergens or mycotoxins that could be affecting your son's health. This diagnostic approach is the most effective way to deal with the problem completely and ensure it does not spread.
