How to quickly remove black mold from wardrobe wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's gotten into the drywall. What's the fastest way to deal with this properly before it gets worse?

Black mold on a wardrobe wall is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity, especially when AC-cooled air meets warm exterior walls, creating condensation. The fastest way to begin addressing it is to first identify and stop the moisture source. This is often condensation from the temperature differential, but you must also check for any hidden plumbing leaks in the wall.

For a surface-level growth, you can clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or is growing on the back of the wardrobe, the porous material often cannot be fully cleaned and may need to be removed and replaced. The fuzzy texture you describe suggests it is established and likely has deeper roots.

Given the climate and the fact it's on an interior wall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall cavity. Spores will have contaminated your stored items; winter clothes will need to be professionally cleaned or laundered at high temperatures to prevent recontamination. Simply cleaning the surface without addressing the hidden moisture problem inside the wall will result in it returning quickly.
