How to quickly remove mold from closet and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to smell really damp, and I just pulled out my winter clothes to find green fuzzy mold all over a couple of my jackets. We had that really humid spell a few weeks back and I think that's when it started. What's the fastest way to get this cleaned and stop it from coming back, especially with all this humidity?

First, remove the affected jackets immediately. Seal them in a plastic bag to prevent spores from spreading to other areas of your apartment. For clothing, professional dry cleaning is the most effective way to salvage mold-damaged fabrics; they have specific chemicals that can kill the mold spores without ruining the material.

For the closet itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe down all surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water). This will kill surface mold. Do not mix cleaners. Ensure the area is well-ventilated during cleaning. After wiping, dry all surfaces thoroughly with a clean cloth.

The key to stopping it from returning is controlling humidity. That damp smell indicates high moisture levels, a common issue in Jumeirah apartments, especially after humid spells and with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. Your closet is likely a dead air space with no circulation.

Move everything out of the closet. Use a fan to circulate air inside the empty space for several hours to ensure it is completely dry. Wipe down walls to check for any hidden condensation. To prevent recurrence, leave the closet door open periodically to allow air from your room's AC to circulate. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel packs inside the closet to absorb ambient moisture. For larger closets, a small, quiet dehumidifier can be very effective.

If the mold covers a large area (more than one square meter) or you see evidence of it growing on the walls themselves, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—it could be a small condensation issue from an AC pipe in the wall or a more significant leak. In Dubai's climate, this is a persistent battle, and targeted remediation based on a proper diagnosis is the only permanent solution.
