How to remove AC mold in humid Dubai climate?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water, and now I’ve spotted black mold starting to grow on the wall behind the unit. It’s been super humid lately and I’m worried it’s just going to get worse. What’s the best way to clean this off and stop it from coming back, especially with our climate?

The immediate concern is the water leak, as mold cannot grow without moisture. First, address the AC unit's drainage issue—clogged condensate drain lines are the most common cause in Dubai's high humidity. Turn off the unit and call your building's maintenance team to fix the leak at its source.
For a small surface area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards. However, in Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mold is often insufficient. The high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for regrowth if any moisture remains within the wall cavity or insulation. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger problem. For a recurring issue or if the leak has been present for some time, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to assess the wall's saturation level and recommend targeted drying techniques. In many cases, proper remediation involves removing affected drywall or insulation to prevent spores from spreading and ensure the structure is completely dry before repainting. This is the only way to stop it from coming back. |
