How to remove and prevent bathroom grout mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. It’s worse in the corner behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. What’s the most effective way to clean this off and stop it from coming back for good?

Bathroom grout mold is extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity and the condensation created by hot showers meeting cool AC-chilled surfaces. The black spots are likely a surface mold, which you can often manage yourself.
For cleaning, start with a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and water. Scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush. For more stubborn growth, a diluted chlorine bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) applied carefully with an old toothbrush is effective. Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning. Preventing its return requires controlling moisture. Use your bathroom's exhaust fan during and for at least 20 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and shower walls with a squeegee after use. This simple habit is the single most effective way to keep mold at bay. For the damp corner behind the toilet, improve air circulation by occasionally moving the toilet cleaning brush or other items that block airflow. A small dehumidifier can also help in a frequently used bathroom. If the mold reappears aggressively within weeks despite these measures, or if it has a musty odor, the growth may be deeper within the wall or behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the source of the moisture—like a hidden plumbing leak or insufficient sealing—which must be resolved for a permanent solution. |
