How to remove and prevent bedroom ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s an interior wall, and we keep the AC on pretty much all the time. What’s the best way to clean this off and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back since it’s so humid here?

Black mold growth in ceiling corners is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The AC creates a cold surface on the ceiling, and when warm, humid air from the room contacts it, condensation forms, providing the perfect damp environment for mold.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, use a rag lightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product to wipe the area. Allow it to dry completely. Repainting over it with a mold-inhibiting primer like Zinsser Mold Killing Primer is crucial to seal the surface. However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The real issue is the moisture. To prevent it from returning, you must control the humidity. First, ensure your AC unit is set to a temperature that minimizes extreme differences with the outdoor air, ideally between 22-24°C. Second, and most importantly, run a dehumidifier in the bedroom. This is the single most effective action for a humid climate like the UAE, as it actively removes the moisture from the air that the mold needs to live. Improving air circulation in the room can also help. If the mold is widespread, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify if there’s a hidden leak in the ceiling or assess whether your AC system itself is contributing to the humidity problem, which is a common issue requiring specialized diagnostics. |
