How to remove and prevent bedroom mold in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom in the Jumeirah villa gets really damp in the mornings, and I’ve just spotted a few small black patches of mold starting to form on the wall behind the wardrobe. We keep the AC on, but the room always feels humid when we wake up. What’s the best way to tackle this existing mold and stop it from spreading any further before it becomes a major issue?

The black patches are likely due to condensation forming on the cooler wall surface behind the wardrobe, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high outdoor humidity meets constantly running AC. First, address the existing mold with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water; apply it with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a microfiber cloth and dry the area completely. Do not use bleach, as it can worsen the problem by adding moisture and doesn't kill the roots.

To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation and reduce humidity in that specific spot. Immediately pull the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow air from the room to circulate behind it. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent, comfortable temperature (around 22-24°C) and that its filters are clean; a clogged filter reduces its dehumidifying capacity. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom overnight can significantly reduce the damp feeling you experience in the mornings.

For a more permanent solution, inspect the wall for any hidden leaks from pipes or AC drain lines, which are a frequent cause in villas. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns after cleaning, or you notice a persistent musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact mold species and moisture source, often using thermal imaging to find hidden condensation points that aren't visible.
