How to remove and prevent black bathroom mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I just spotted a few fuzzy patches in the corner near the ceiling. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks, and I think our exhaust fan isn't strong enough. What’s the most effective way to tackle this myself, and is there a specific type of anti-mold paint or sealant I should get from ACE or Dragon Mart?

That black grout and fuzzy growth are classic signs of bathroom mold, extremely common here due to our high humidity and condensation from showers. For a small, surface-level issue, you can handle it yourself.

Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. For tougher patches, a dedicated EPA-approved mold remover from ACE is more effective. Spray it generously on the affected areas, let it sit for at least 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub vigorously with a stiff-bristled brush. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

Prevention is critical. Your suspicion about the exhaust fan is likely correct; it should run during and for at least 20-30 minutes after a shower. If it's weak, replacing it with a higher-capacity model is a wise investment. Wiping down shower walls and squeegeeing glass after each use removes the moisture mold needs to grow. Consistently leaving the bathroom door open after showering also improves air circulation.

For paint, look for a mold-inhibiting primer and bathroom-specific paint labeled as mildew-resistant. These contain additives that help prevent spore growth. Re-sealing your grout with a high-quality, waterproof sealant is essential after a deep clean.

If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area (more than one square meter), or you see discoloration on drywall or ceilings, it indicates a persistent moisture issue. In these cases, a professional inspection can identify the root cause, like hidden leaks or excessive humidity, which DIY methods can't resolve.
