How to remove and prevent black mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be related to the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, probably because we never move the heavy furniture. It's definitely worse during the humid summer months. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back without having to call a professional?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, which is crucial in Dubai's humidity. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the root structure of the mold.

After cleaning, the surface must be completely dried. Use a fan or dehumidifier to accomplish this, as residual moisture will guarantee the mold returns. To prevent recurrence, keep the furniture at least two inches from the wall. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel in the space behind it.

The root cause is likely condensation from your air conditioner meeting the warm, humid air, a common issue in UAE homes. For persistent coughing in children, the safest approach is professional inspection and testing to identify the mold species. Surface cleaning addresses visible growth but not potential spores in the air. If the area is larger than one square meter, or if the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional assessment is strongly advised to ensure the indoor environment is safe.
