How to remove and prevent black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has developed a few small patches of black mold. I noticed it when I was putting away winter clothes, and it seems to have gotten worse since last week's humidity. We run the AC constantly, but I'm worried the lack of airflow in the closed closet is the problem. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back without having to leave the closet doors open all the time?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai villas, especially on exterior walls that face humidity and temperature fluctuations. The constant AC cooling inside creates condensation on the warmer wall surface, and the lack of airflow in a closed closet provides the perfect damp, stagnant environment for mold to grow.

For small patches (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe dry. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the underlying moisture or spores.

Prevention is critical in our climate. First, improve airflow. Leave the closet doors ajar for a few hours daily or install louvered doors to allow circulation. Ensure the room's AC vent is not blocked and is directing air towards the closet. For a more permanent solution, a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs placed inside the closet can help maintain lower humidity levels.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue may be more serious. It could indicate a hidden leak in the wall or insufficient insulation. In these cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to identify the true moisture source. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs can also test the mold to confirm the species and ensure it is properly addressed.
