How to remove and prevent black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black, fuzzy patches appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been incredibly humid in Dubai lately. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it coming back?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black, fuzzy patches on an exterior wall during a period of high humidity—you are likely dealing with Cladosporium or possibly Aspergillus, two common molds in Dubai's climate. The exterior wall is a key clue, as it suggests the issue is driven by thermal bridging and condensation, where the cold air from your AC unit meets the warm, humid air infiltrating from outside.

For a small, isolated patch (less than 10 square feet), a careful DIY approach is possible. First, contain the area by sealing off the closet with plastic sheeting. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the affected surface with a solution of detergent and warm water, not bleach. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can exacerbate moisture problems. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area with a fan. However, please note that this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture issue or any spores that may have become airborne.

Given Dubai's relentless humidity and the fact the mold is on an exterior wall, the probability of recurrence is extremely high without addressing the root cause. The wall cavity may have condensation or a minor leak that is not visible. Effective prevention requires lowering the indoor relative humidity below 60% through consistent AC use, ensuring proper ventilation, and potentially using a dehumidifier. For a lasting solution, the wall's insulation and vapor barrier should be inspected to prevent thermal bridging.

For a comprehensive assessment and to ensure the mold has not colonized the interstitial wall space, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and perform air quality testing to determine spore count levels.
