How to remove and prevent black mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the black mold I just found growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. We live in a ground-floor villa in Jumeirah and I'm worried the humidity from the last few weeks is seeping in from outside. What's the best way to clean this immediately and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The black mold you've described (likely Stachybotrys chartarum) is a serious concern, especially given the symptoms in your children and the ground-floor location in Jumeirah. The persistent high humidity, particularly during summer and following rain, creates a perfect environment for mold when combined with the thermal bridging and potential capillary rise from the ground common in villas.

For immediate, small-scale cleaning (areas less than 1 square meter), personal protection is non-negotiable. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area from children and pets. A solution of detergent (like dish soap) and warm water can be used to scrub the mold off non-porous surfaces. Avoid bleach, as it does not address the root cause and can release harmful biotoxins. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely using fans and a dehumidifier.

However, given the location (behind furniture, suggesting a potential cold spot and hidden moisture) and the health symptoms, I strongly recommend you stop and call a professional. Disturbing the mold can aerosolize mycotoxins, worsening the air quality and health impacts. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the moisture intrusion—whether it's rising damp, a hidden leak, or condensation from AC supply ducts—which is the only way to achieve a permanent solution.

To prevent recurrence, the moisture source must be eliminated. This may involve exterior waterproofing, improving drainage around the villa's perimeter, repairing leaking AC drain pans, and ensuring adequate ventilation.
