How to remove and prevent black mold in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid lately, and I've just spotted some fuzzy black patches in the corner of our master bedroom closet. This is the room closest to the AC unit. With the summer humidity in full swing, I'm worried it's going to spread. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

First, identify the source of moisture. In Dubai's climate, this is often condensation from an improperly sealed AC duct or high indoor humidity. The AC unit itself may need inspection, as units can become moisture sources if drainage is blocked or insulation is failing.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. Allow the area to dry completely. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during and after the process. Prevention is critical. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid summer months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Improve air circulation by ensuring closet doors are not kept tightly shut and that furniture is not pushed directly against walls. Check that your AC is set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce condensation. If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can perform an air quality test to identify the spore types and concentration, and use thermal imaging to pinpoint hidden moisture sources within walls or AC ducts that are the true cause. For villas, this is a common requirement for a lasting solution. |
