How to remove and prevent black mold in Jumeirah closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers has been great, but this past humid season our walk-in closet on the outside wall started getting these black speckles in the corners. We run the AC constantly, but the clothes in there still feel a bit damp. I’m worried it’s the start of black mold. What’s the best way to completely clean this and prevent it from coming back next summer?

Black mold growth in a JLT closet is a classic Dubai issue, driven by the high humidity and the constant cooling creating condensation on cold exterior walls. The damp feeling on clothes confirms a persistent moisture problem that cleaning alone won't fix.
For the existing growth, first identify the extent. If the area is small (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and can irritate the airways. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan. However, complete prevention requires addressing the source. The moisture is likely from condensation due to the temperature difference between the cold AC-chilled room and the hot exterior wall. To stop it from returning, you need to improve air circulation and reduce humidity specifically in that closet. Keep the closet doors open as often as possible and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a ventilating fan inside it. Ensure the AC unit is set to a reasonable temperature; excessively cold settings can worsen condensation. For a persistent or recurring problem, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out a hidden leak in the wall or a faulty AC drain line, which are common here. They can also measure the exact humidity levels and identify the mold species through lab analysis to confirm the risk level, as "black mold" is often used for many types. In many cases, the solution involves targeted application of antimicrobial coatings and adjustments to the AC system to better manage the micro-climate in that room. |
