How to remove and prevent black mold in UAE bathroom?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black over the last few weeks, and no matter how much I scrub with regular cleaner, it won't come off. I live in an older building in Bur Dubai and the bathroom doesn't have a window, so it never seems to fully dry out. What is the most effective product or method I can use here in the UAE to kill this mold and prevent it from coming back?

Black grout in a Dubai bathroom is almost certainly mold, thriving on the constant high humidity and lack of ventilation. Regular cleaners often fail because they only address surface stains, not the fungal roots penetrating the porous grout.
For removal, start with a dedicated mold remover available at hardware stores. Look for products containing chlorine-based agents or hydrogen peroxide. Apply it according to the instructions, allowing it to sit long enough to penetrate and kill the organism at its root. Always ensure the area is well-ventilated during application by running the bathroom exhaust fan. Scrubbing with a stiff brush after the solution has dwelled is key. Preventing its return is the critical part. The core issue is excess moisture. Run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If the fan is weak or non-existent, this is your first priority for repair. Wipe down shower walls and squeegee water off after use to reduce standing moisture. A small dehumidifier can be very effective in a windowless bathroom. For a more permanent solution, consider having the old, compromised grout removed and replaced with a high-quality, mold-resistant grout or epoxy. If the black discoloration covers a large area (more than one square meter) or if you notice a persistent musty smell or health symptoms, the growth may be more extensive behind the tiles. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly air testing can identify the full scope before remediation begins. |
