How to remove and prevent black mold in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has started to develop these small black speckles in the corners. I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago after that really heavy humidity last month, and now it seems to be spreading a bit onto some of our leather bags stored inside. I’m really worried about it getting on our clothes and causing health issues. What’s the most effective way to clean this and stop it from coming back in our Dubai apartment?

The black speckles you've described in your bedroom wardrobe are a classic presentation of mold growth, likely Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which are extremely common in Dubai due to our unique climate. The issue is not the wardrobe itself but the environmental conditions. The exterior wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the internal surface temperature drops below the dew point due to continuous AC use. When warm, humid air from the room (especially from en-suite bathrooms or open windows) meets this colder surface, condensation forms, creating the perfect environment for mold. Your leather bags are a food source for the mold, accelerating its spread.

For immediate cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces (laminated wood, plastic), scrub the area with a solution of detergent and warm water, then disinfect with a spray of 70% isopropyl alcohol, allowing it to dwell for 10 minutes before wiping dry. For porous materials like unfinished wood or your leather goods, professional cleaning is strongly advised, as spores will be deeply embedded. Do not use bleach, as it does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality.

Prevention is critical and requires addressing the moisture source. First, improve air circulation within the wardrobe by not overpacking it and leaving space between items and the external wall. Use moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant bags, but note these are a temporary aid, not a solution. The most effective long-term fix is to control the room's relative humidity. Ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and serviced regularly to effectively remove humidity from the air. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom during the most humid months can also be highly effective.

Given that the mold is already spreading to personal items, a professional inspection is recommended. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras to precisely identify the cold bridge and condensation points, along with hygrometers to measure humidity levels. We can then provide a targeted remediation and prevention plan.
