How to remove and prevent black mold on drywall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's an interior wall and the room is always cool from the AC, but it feels damp. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes and I want to stop it for good. What's the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back, especially since it's on a drywall surface?

Black mold on drywall in Dubai is almost always a moisture issue, not just a surface problem. The high humidity here, combined with cold spots from AC units, creates condensation inside walls—especially on exterior-facing ones or in closets with poor air circulation.

First, address the moisture source. In many Dubai buildings, this is thermal bridging where the cold interior wall meets the hot exterior, causing condensation inside the cavity. Move all clothes away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room to keep humidity below 60%, which is critical here.

For removal on drywall, scrubbing with detergent and water can remove surface growth, but it will return if the wall cavity remains damp. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can treat it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of detergent and water, or a vinegar solution. Avoid bleach—it doesn’t penetrate porous surfaces like drywall and can worsen indoor air quality.

However, if the mold returns quickly or the drywall feels soft or damp, the problem is inside the wall. In many cases, the only permanent solution is to cut out and replace the affected drywall section to properly dry and treat the cavity behind it. This is a common necessity in Dubai's climate.

Prevention is about controlling humidity and temperature differentials. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly. Keep closet doors slightly ajar and avoid overpacking them to allow air flow. Consider a hygrometer to monitor bedroom humidity levels. For persistent or large-scale issues, a professional inspection with a thermal camera can identify hidden condensation points and moisture sources within the wall structure.
