How to remove and prevent carpet mold near beach villa walls?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots forming along the edges of the bedroom carpet where it meets the wall. It’s the room closest to the beach, so I’m worried the humidity is the main culprit, especially after this last particularly humid winter. What’s the best way to thoroughly clean this and what can we do to stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold on carpets in beachside villas is a direct result of high humidity and condensation, a very common issue in Jumeirah. The wall-carpet junction is a prime spot because cool exterior walls meeting warm, humid indoor air creates condensation that the carpet backing soaks up.
For thorough cleaning, first identify the moisture source. Check for leaks from the wall or window and ensure your AC is dehumidifying properly. For cleaning, never use bleach—it can damage fibers and doesn't address the root cause. Instead, use a solution of white vinegar and water or a commercial mold-cleaning product designed for carpets. Scrub the area, then use a wet-dry vacuum to extract as much moisture as possible. The carpet may need to be lifted to dry the underlay and subfloor completely, which is often where the problem originates. To prevent recurrence, controlling indoor humidity is essential. Maintain your AC system to ensure it is effectively removing moisture from the air; this is its most critical function in our climate. Consider using a dedicated dehumidifier, especially during the more humid winter months. Improve air circulation around the perimeter of the room with fans and by keeping furniture slightly away from walls. For a permanent solution, assess whether the exterior wall has adequate insulation to prevent condensation. If the mold covers a large area (typically more than 1 square meter), has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and concentration, which guides the correct remediation strategy. |
