How to remove and prevent closet mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I’m guessing it’s from the humidity, especially after the recent foggy mornings. What’s the most effective way to clean this off the walls and prevent it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, you are dealing with a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high ambient humidity, especially during foggy mornings, combined with the constant use of air conditioning. The temperature differential between the cool closet interior and the warm, humid air creates the perfect environment for mold spores to colonize on organic materials like dust, cardboard boxes, and even the wallpaper paste or paint on your walls.

For immediate remediation, it is crucial to address this safely. Do not dry brush the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores. For a small area, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, gently wipe the affected wall surface with a cloth dampened with a solution of warm water and a detergent specifically designed for mold removal. Avoid using bleach, as it only superficially removes the color and does not address the root moisture problem or kill the hyphae (roots) embedded in porous surfaces. All affected clothing and storage items must be removed, professionally cleaned, or discarded if non-salvageable.

Prevention is the only permanent solution. The root cause is excess moisture. First, improve air circulation within the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and ensure there is a clear air path from your AC supply vent. Consider installing a battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the closet. Crucially, inspect for and seal any potential thermal bridges or leaks from adjacent bathrooms or the external wall. The wall may be significantly colder than the room's dew point.

For a confirmed, lasting solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of the condensation and moisture intrusion. We then perform hygienization using UAE-approved, non-toxic biocides and can apply anti-microbial coatings to prevent recurrence.
