How to remove and prevent closet mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall of my Burj Khalifa apartment, has started to smell really damp. I found small black speckles on a few of my leather bags and shoes stored in the back. This is the first time I've seen this in the three years I've lived here, and it's been especially humid lately. What's the most effective way to deal with this and prevent it from coming back, besides just tossing a dehumidifier in there?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity, exacerbated by a lack of air circulation within an enclosed closet. The black speckles on your leather goods are likely the initial stages of colonization. The interior wall location is a key detail, as it could indicate a hidden condensation issue within the wall cavity from the air conditioning system or a minor, undetected plumbing leak.

The most effective way to deal with this requires a systematic approach. First, remove all affected items from the closet. For non-porous surfaces like walls and shelves, a solution of detergent and water can be used for cleaning. However, for porous materials like leather, specialized cleaning is required to prevent permanent damage and spore dissemination. Simply placing a dehumidifier is a temporary measure and does not address the root cause.

Prevention is critical. Ensure your HVAC system is serviced regularly to manage humidity levels, a requirement under Dubai's property standards. Improve air circulation by leaving closet doors ajar periodically and avoiding over-packing. Consider installing a low-wattage incandescent bulb or a passive moisture absorber like silica gel in the closet. For persistent issues, the wall cavity may need to be inspected for insulation or vapor barrier faults.

Given the value of the affected items and the potential for hidden growth, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source, which is essential for a permanent solution. We can also conduct hygienization to safely remediate the affected area and contents.
