How to remove and prevent closet mold in humid climates?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah Park. We keep the door shut most of the time and I'm worried it's from the humidity. What's the best way to clean this off and how can we stop it from coming back for good?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth caused by localized high humidity and poor air circulation, a common issue in Dubai's climate, especially in enclosed spaces like closets. The first step is to address the existing growth. For small, surface-level spots, you can clean the area with a solution of detergent and water. However, avoid using bleach, as it only discolors the mold and does not address the root moisture problem or remove the spores effectively. It is crucial to wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores or causing skin irritation.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the environment. The core issue is the shut door, which traps humid air and creates a perfect breeding ground. To mitigate this, leave the closet door ajar periodically to allow your home's air-conditioned, dehumidified air to circulate. If the closet has an external wall, check for any condensation or leaks. For a more permanent solution, consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside the closet to actively absorb excess moisture.

Given the properties of mold, what appears as a small surface issue can sometimes indicate a deeper problem within the wall cavity. For a definitive assessment and to ensure the health of your indoor environment, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Our certified experts at Saniservice use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify hidden sources of moisture and conduct air quality testing to determine the spore count and species. We can then recommend and execute a certified remediation plan to resolve the issue permanently. For a consultation, please call us at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com.
