How to remove and prevent closet mold on damp wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif, and it feels a bit damp to the touch. This seems to have gotten worse since the weather got more humid. What's the best way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it coming back from inside the wall?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai villas, particularly on exterior walls. The temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior causes condensation to form within the wall cavity, creating the perfect damp environment for mold. The fact that it's behind stored clothing, which restricts airflow, exacerbates the problem.

For immediate, small-scale cleaning, you can use a solution of detergent and water or a diluted vinegar mix. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the visible growth thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source or kill the roots.

However, I must strongly advise that this is likely more than a surface issue. The dampness you feel suggests moisture is wicking through from inside the wall. Simply cleaning the surface will be a temporary fix; the mold will almost certainly return because the conducive conditions remain. In the UAE, proper remediation requires identifying and eliminating the source of moisture intrusion to comply with health and safety standards.

For a persistent problem like this on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact location and extent of the moisture within the wall structure. Remediation may involve creating access points to dry the cavity and treat the mold from the inside.

To prevent recurrence, ensure adequate airflow in the closet (leave space between clothes and the wall, use a dehumidifier), and consider having a professional apply a anti-condensation coating or improve the insulation on that exterior wall.
