How to remove and prevent closet mold on exterior wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. I'm worried the humidity from the recent weather is getting trapped in there, especially since we keep the door closed. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Black mold in closets on exterior walls is very common in Dubai due to the high outdoor humidity condensing on cooler interior surfaces. The closed door and lack of air circulation create a perfect environment for it. You need to address both the existing growth and the moisture source.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover sprayed on the surface, left for 15 minutes, then scrubbed with a brush is effective for small areas. Never use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the roots deeper. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. For persistent or larger patches (over one square foot), a professional inspection is recommended to identify the extent and underlying cause, as the issue might be within the wall cavity.

Prevention is critical. You must improve air circulation and control humidity in that space. First, leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day to allow conditioned air to flow through. Second, ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, even when you're out; setting it to around 24°C helps. Third, consider using a renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet, which is ideal for small, enclosed spaces. Finally, inspect the exterior wall for any cracks or compromised seals that might be letting humid air in, as this is a frequent issue with villa construction here. The goal is to keep the relative humidity in that closet below 60% to prevent regrowth.
