How to remove and prevent closet mold on leather and walls?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting black spots on my leather bags and shoes, and I just noticed it’s spreading to the wall itself. We had that period of heavy dew and humidity last month, and I think the lack of air circulation in there is making it worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this off and prevent it from coming back for good?

That's classic condensation mould from Dubai's high humidity. The leather and wall are likely feeding the same colony, so you must treat both simultaneously.
For the leather items, move them to a dry, well-ventilated area immediately. Wipe them down with a soft cloth lightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol, then allow them to dry completely away from sunlight. For the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover spray applied with a microfiber cloth is effective for surface growth. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. Prevention is critical. The lack of air circulation is the main issue. Leave the closet doors open whenever possible. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber like silica gel packs placed inside can help control the damp microenvironment. For a more permanent solution, have an AC technician check that your room's unit is properly balanced to reduce humidity levels, as this is a common issue here. If the mould on the wall penetrates the paint or appears on the other side of the wall, this could indicate a more serious condensation problem within the wall cavity itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters is needed to assess the extent and source of the moisture, as surface cleaning alone will not stop it from returning. |
