How to remove and prevent mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's an interior wall in our Jumeirah apartment, and with the humidity lately, the room just feels damp all the time. We keep the AC running but it doesn't seem to be enough.
What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, especially in a tight space like behind furniture?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation. The black spots are likely surface mold feeding on organic material in the dust and paint due to the trapped humid air. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated, non-bleach mold cleaner. Bleach is not recommended as it can damage paint and only lightens mold without killing the roots.
Dry the wall completely with a fan before even considering moving the furniture back. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC creates a significant temperature differential between cold walls and the humid room air, leading to condensation—especially behind large furniture blocking airflow. This is a common issue in Jumeirah apartments. To prevent recurrence, you must address the humidity source. Ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly; a clogged drain pan can saturate the air with moisture. Keep the AC running consistently to manage humidity, even when out. Most importantly, leave a 5-10 cm gap between large furniture and exterior or cold interior walls to allow air to circulate. A small, discreet dehumidifier can be highly effective for a perpetually damp bedroom. If the mold covering is extensive (over one square meter), has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the growth may be within the wall itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and possibly lab analysis is advised to identify the full extent and recommend appropriate remediation. |
