How to remove and prevent mold in a windowless walk-in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah 3 has been great, but for the last few weeks, the walk-in wardrobe in our master bedroom has started to smell really damp. I just pulled out my winter clothes from the back and found a few jackets with fuzzy black spots on them, which I'm sure is mold. We run the AC constantly, but it's an internal room with no windows. What's the most effective way to kill the existing mold and prevent it from coming back in this kind of humid, enclosed space?

That damp smell and fuzzy black spots are classic signs of a mold issue, very common in windowless rooms here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. The AC cools the air but doesn't remove enough moisture, leading to condensation on cooler surfaces like walls and leather goods, creating a perfect environment for mold.

For the existing mold on your clothes, take them outside to brush off the spores. Then, wash them with a fungicidal laundry additive; standard detergent won't kill the mold roots. For non-washable items, professional dry cleaning is necessary.

Inside the wardrobe, wipe all surfaces with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Avoid bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and doesn't prevent regrowth. The porous walls and shelves may harbor hidden mold, which surface cleaning won't address.

Prevention is critical. First, reduce humidity. A small, standalone dehumidifier placed inside the wardrobe is the most effective solution for an enclosed, windowless space. Keep the wardrobe doors slightly ajar to allow air circulation. Ensure your villa's AC unit is serviced and its drain lines are clear, as a blocked drain pan can contribute excess moisture to your indoor air.

For a persistent problem, the source of moisture may be hidden. A professional inspection with moisture meters can identify condensation within the walls or other hidden dampness that DIY methods can't detect. In many cases, resolving the issue requires identifying and correcting the underlying humidity source.
