How to remove and prevent mold in AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah has been blowing out a faint, damp odor for the past couple of months, and I just spotted some dark, speckled patches around the edges of the vent itself. We run the AC constantly, and I'm worried the humidity from the unit is causing mold to grow inside the ducts. What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

Dark patches around AC vents in Dubai often indicate surface mold growth, which is common due to our high humidity and constant AC operation. The damp odor suggests moisture is accumulating inside the unit or ductwork.

For the visible mold on the vent cover, wipe it with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Ensure the area is completely dry afterward. Do not use bleach, as it can damage surfaces and doesn't prevent regrowth.

This surface cleaning is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains. The persistent odor points to a problem inside the system, likely in the evaporator coils or drip pan where condensation occurs. This requires a professional AC deep-cleaning service that includes applying a mold-inhibiting coating to treated surfaces after cleaning.

To prevent recurrence, the key is controlling moisture. Ensure your AC unit’s drain line is not clogged, as a blocked line causes water to back up into the system. Maintaining a lower indoor humidity level, ideally below 60%, can help. For a long-term solution, consider having your ductwork professionally inspected and cleaned if necessary, as spores can spread from contaminated ducts.
