How to remove and prevent mold in Dubai closets?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for a couple of years, but it's only this winter, after the humidity and rains, that I'm seeing small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I’m really worried it’s spreading and will ruin everything. What is the most effective way to clean this mold off the walls and prevent it from coming back next season?

The black spots in your closet are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai after winter rains due to the high humidity and temperature shifts creating condensation. For a small area, you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear a mask and gloves, scrub the area, and let it dry completely before repainting with an anti-mold primer.

To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. In a closet, this is often due to a lack of air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically and avoid over-packing clothes. Consider using a compact dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) inside the closet, especially during the humid months. Ensure your room's AC is functioning correctly, as it is your primary dehumidifier; set it to a consistent, cooler temperature to reduce condensation.

For a recurring problem in a villa, the issue might be more systemic, possibly related to external wall leaks or insufficient insulation, which are common here. If the mold covers more than a square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you notice a musty smell, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the extent. They can use tools like moisture meters and thermal cameras, and a lab analysis can confirm the mold type, which guides the proper remediation protocol.
