how to remove and prevent mold in Dubai's humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been so humid since the heavy rains a few weeks ago. I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall to find a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading behind it. The wall actually feels damp to the touch. What’s the most effective way to kill this and stop it from coming back in our Dubai climate?

Black mold growth behind furniture after heavy rain is very common here, as the high humidity gets trapped against cooler interior walls. The damp wall indicates moisture is likely wicking through from the outside, which must be addressed first.

For immediate removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover. However, killing surface mold is only a temporary fix if the moisture source remains. The wall must be completely dried using dehumidifiers and fans before any repainting occurs; sealing dampness in will guarantee its return.

To stop it permanently, identify the moisture entry point. For villas, this is often cracked external render or compromised waterproofing from the recent rains, which requires professional repair. Inside, ensure your AC is running consistently to manage humidity, even when the house is empty. Keep furniture at least two inches from exterior walls to allow air circulation. A professional inspection with a moisture meter can pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion, which is critical for a lasting solution in our climate.
