How to remove and prevent mold in humid UAE villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah 3 has been feeling really humid lately, and I just discovered black spots in the back of the wardrobe in my kid's bedroom. I’m worried it’s mold and that it might be affecting the air quality, especially with the AC running constantly. What’s the most effective way to completely remove this and prevent it from coming back, considering our damp UAE weather?

Mold in a Dubai villa is common due to high humidity and constant AC use, which can create condensation. For the black spots in the wardrobe, first identify the moisture source—it’s often a small leak or condensation from an adjacent cold wall.

For a small, isolated area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn’t kill the roots. Dry the area completely within 24-48 hours using fans and a dehumidifier; this is the most critical step to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, given the villa’s overall humidity and the mold’s location in a child’s bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Visible spots are often just the tip of the issue, and spores can spread through the AC system, affecting air quality throughout the home. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping with thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify spore types and concentrations. Companies with their own microbiology labs, like ours, can provide this data to tailor the remediation plan.

To prevent recurrence, control indoor humidity. Maintain your AC unit—ensure the drain pans and ducts are clean and flowing freely to prevent internal moisture buildup. Use a stand-alone dehumidifier, especially in naturally damp rooms, to keep humidity below 60%. Improve air circulation by not overfilling wardrobes and leaving space between furniture and walls. For long-term prevention, consider applying an anti-microbial coating to susceptible areas after they are professionally cleaned and dried.
