How to remove and prevent mold in seaside apartment wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the sea in our Marina apartment, has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months. I just pulled out some winter clothes and found a few dark, speckled patches on the back wall and on a leather jacket. I run the AC constantly, but the smell won't go away. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

That sounds like a classic case of mold growth fueled by condensation and high humidity. The sea-facing wall in Marina is a thermal bridge, meaning it's colder than the interior walls. When your AC cools the room's humid air, it condenses on that colder surface inside the wardrobe, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

For cleaning, first address the immediate problem. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove all items from the wardrobe. For the hard surfaces, scrub the visible mold patches with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, then wipe down with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect. Discard heavily contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes. For the leather jacket, have it professionally cleaned by a service experienced with mold.

Preventing its return requires controlling moisture. Leave the wardrobe doors slightly ajar to promote air circulation. Ensure the AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, as constantly turning it on and off encourages condensation. A small disposable desiccant dehumidifier box placed inside the wardrobe can passively absorb excess moisture. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional assess the wall for insulation issues.

If the problem is extensive, recurring, or you experience health symptoms, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and air/surface sampling is advised to identify the mold species and the exact moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue that often requires a combination of cleaning, behavioral changes, and sometimes professional intervention to manage effectively.
