How to remove and prevent mold in UAE humidity?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling extra humid lately, and I just pulled back the wardrobe in my youngest daughter's bedroom to find a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it. It’s the wall that faces the outside, and with the recent humidity, I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good, especially with the UAE summer coming up?

The most effective way to handle the mold behind the wardrobe is to first address the moisture source, then clean the area, and finally implement prevention measures. Given its location on an exterior wall, this is a classic case of condensation mold, worsened by the high UAE humidity and the lack of air circulation behind the furniture.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the patch with a solution of detergent and water or a dedicated mold cleaner. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not kill the mold roots. Dry the area completely immediately after cleaning with a fan. However, cleaning alone is a temporary fix if the underlying humidity isn't controlled.

Preventing its return is the critical step. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the exterior wall to allow air to circulate. This is a common and necessary practice in Dubai villas. Ensure the room's AC is functioning correctly and set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce humidity levels indoors. Consider using a standalone dehumidifier in that room, especially during the upcoming summer months when humidity peaks. Check for any cracks or leaks in the external wall sealant that might be allowing moisture ingress.

If the mold patch is larger than one square meter, has penetrated the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to identify the exact condensation levels within the wall and perform air or swab testing to identify the mold species, which is important for health reasons and crafting an effective remediation plan.
