How to remove and prevent mold in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My wardrobe in the master bedroom has started to smell really damp, and I just found a patch of black mold on the back wall where my clothes hang. We keep the AC on most of the time, but with the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s not enough. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like a dehumidifier or something else?

Wardrobe mold is a common issue in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. First, address the visible mold safely. For a small patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as it only removes the color and can worsen airborne spores. Allow the area to dry completely.
Prevention is critical here. The damp smell indicates high humidity trapped in an enclosed space. A dehumidifier can help, but for a wardrobe, moisture-absorbing desiccant bags or boxes are more targeted and effective. Ensure there is a small air gap between your clothes and the wall; never push garments flush against it. Leave the wardrobe doors ajar for periods each day to promote air circulation. The root cause is often condensation forming on cooler interior walls, especially if it's an external wall. Consistently running your AC helps, but ensure it's set to a sufficiently low humidity level, not just a cold temperature. If the problem persists or is extensive (over roughly one square foot), a professional inspection is wise to rule out a hidden leak or significant condensation issue, as DHA regulations for villa rentals often require landlords to address such dampness. Certified inspectors can use moisture meters to identify the exact source. |
