How to remove and prevent mold on bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our wardrobe in the bedroom has a bunch of black and green fuzzy patches. It's our first winter in this Jumeirah villa and I guess we weren't prepared for the humidity, especially with the AC not running as often. What is the absolute best way to clean this off the painted wall and stop it from coming back?

The wall mold you're describing is a common issue in Dubai villas during winter, when reduced AC use allows humidity to rise above the 60% threshold where mold thrives. For a painted wall, start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, but avoid oversaturating the wall as this can drive moisture deeper. After scrubbing, wipe the area with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely.

Stopping its return is the critical part. The mold behind the wardrobe is a symptom of poor air circulation and high relative humidity. Move the wardrobe a few inches away from the wall to allow air to flow. A small dehumidifier in the room can help maintain humidity below 50%. You must also run your AC system regularly, even in cooler weather, as its primary function here is dehumidification, not just cooling.

For extensive growth (covering more than a few square feet), or if it returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is advised to rule out a hidden moisture source within the wall itself, which DIY cleaning cannot address. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping to find the root cause.
