How to remove and prevent recurring bathroom black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading because my allergies have been acting up. What's the most effective way to treat this myself before it gets worse, and should I be worried about it coming back?

Bathroom black mold in Dubai is common due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers meeting cold AC-chilled surfaces. For a small patch you've just noticed, immediate DIY treatment can be effective.
First, address the surface growth. Wear a mask and gloves. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often more effective than bleach at killing the mold organism at the root. Spray it generously, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward. Preventing its return is the critical step. This is almost always an issue of excess moisture and poor ventilation. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. If your fan is weak or you don't have one, opening a window is essential. Wiping down wet walls and ceilings with a squeegee after use removes the immediate moisture mold needs to grow. For Marina apartments, a small desiccant dehumidifier can make a significant difference in managing ambient humidity. Given your allergies are acting up, the patch may be larger than it appears or releasing spores into the air. Mold can grow behind tiles or within the ceiling void. If the mold returns after thorough cleaning and diligent moisture control, or covers an area larger than one square foot, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden growth and identify the species, as some types are more allergenic than others. |
