How to remove and prevent wall mold behind furniture?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse. What’s the best way to deal with this properly and stop it from coming back?

That black mold behind furniture is extremely common in Dubai, especially on exterior walls during humid periods. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing condensation and creating a perfect environment for mold when the furniture traps moisture.
For removal, first move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow complete air circulation. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For surface mold on paint, scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold removal cleaner. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the roots. Let the wall dry completely. To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. This is almost always condensation from the temperature difference. Keep the furniture at least two inches away from the exterior wall to allow air to flow. Regularly run an exhaust fan or a portable dehumidifier in the room, especially after showers. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce indoor humidity levels; 22-24°C is a good target. If the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster, or if it covers a large area (more than one square meter), professional assessment is recommended. Remediation often involves cutting out affected materials, treating the cavity, and repairing. A proper inspection can identify if there's a hidden leak adding to the problem, which is a different issue than condensation. |
