How to remove and prevent wall mold behind sofa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's an interior wall, so I'm worried the AC might be causing it, especially with how humid it's been lately. What's the best way to clean this off and, more importantly, how can I stop it from coming back for good?

The black spots behind your sofa are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The sofa traps moisture and reduces air circulation against that wall, creating a perfect environment for mold.
For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like painted drywall, a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol or a diluted vinegar and water mix is often effective. Scrub gently to avoid damaging the paint. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the mold roots beneath the surface, allowing it to return quickly. Preventing its return requires addressing the moisture source. This is almost always due to the temperature difference between the cold AC air and the humid room air, causing condensation on cooler wall surfaces. First, move the sofa at least a few inches away from the wall to drastically improve air circulation. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent temperature and not excessively cold, as a very low setting increases condensation risk. Using a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months, can help maintain a relative humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has penetrated deeply into the wall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden issues and properly remediate it. Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species to confirm the health risk and verify that the remediation was successful through post-clean testing. |
