How to remove bathroom ceiling mold without calling landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Discovery Gardens apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots along the bottom of the bathroom ceiling. The room doesn't have a window and we run the exhaust fan, but it's been incredibly humid lately. What's the best way to get rid of this for good without having to call the landlord right away?

The black spots are likely mold growth, common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and lack of ventilation. For a small, surface-level patch, you can manage it yourself.

Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like a painted ceiling, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Spray the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during this process. The exhaust fan alone in a windowless bathroom often can't handle Dubai's humidity levels; a portable dehumidifier or regularly leaving the bathroom door open after showers will help control moisture long-term.

This is a temporary fix if the mold is only on the surface. If the staining persists after cleaning, or if the ceiling material feels soft or spongy, the mold has likely penetrated deeper. This indicates a more serious moisture issue, potentially from a leak in the plumbing or from the apartment above. At that point, contacting your landlord or building management is necessary, as structural repairs are their responsibility under typical Dubai tenancy contracts. For health concerns or to identify the mold type, a professional inspection with lab analysis can provide a definitive answer.
