How to remove bathroom mold and is it a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black spots growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It's our main bathroom in a Jumeirah villa, and it doesn't have a window so the humidity just stays trapped in there after showers. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be worried about my family's health from breathing this in?

The black spots in your grout are likely mold, thriving in the high humidity of a windowless bathroom. For most healthy individuals, this type of mold primarily causes irritation—congestion, sneezing, or worsened allergy symptoms. The risk is higher for infants, elderly family members, or anyone with asthma or a compromised immune system.

Effective removal starts with addressing the source of moisture. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee immediately after use is highly effective. For the existing mold, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated grout cleaner applied with a stiff brush can remove surface growth. However, if the mold has penetrated the grout or is growing behind it, cleaning will only be a temporary fix.

In Dubai's climate, where high humidity is constant, the underlying issue is persistent moisture. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the spores may have spread into the wall cavity, requiring professional assessment. Remediation specialists can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the spore types and concentrations in your air, which is the only way to fully understand the health risk to your family.
