How to remove bathroom mold and notify landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling edge above the shower. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom window is constantly fogged up and the smell is really musty. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be calling my landlord about this or is it something I can handle myself?

Bathroom mold in Dubai apartments is extremely common due to our high humidity levels and condensation from hot showers. For the black spots along your ceiling, first identify the extent. If it's a small area (less than one square meter) and confined to the surface, you can often handle it yourself.
Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Dry the area completely with a fan afterward—this is critical. However, this only addresses the visible growth. The constant humidity and condensation on your window indicate an underlying moisture issue, typically inadequate ventilation. You should absolutely notify your landlord. Under typical Dubai rental contracts, structural issues like persistent dampness and mold caused by poor ventilation or building envelope leaks are the landlord's responsibility. Document the issue with clear photos and send a formal email to them or the property management company. They are obligated to address the root cause, which may involve improving the bathroom's extractor fan, repairing grouting, or fixing any hidden leaks. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or you notice a persistent musty smell throughout the apartment, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source and species of mold, which is important for determining the correct remediation strategy, especially if the problem is more extensive than it appears. |
