How to remove bathroom mold and report to management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately and our bathroom’s windowless, so the ventilation isn't great. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, and should we be reporting it to the building management first?

Start by addressing the moisture source. In Marina apartments, windowless bathrooms rely solely on exhaust fans, which often aren't run long enough. Run the fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces with a squeegee. This is the most critical step to prevent immediate regrowth.
For a small patch of surface mold, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover spray can be effective. Apply, let it sit for an hour, then scrub and wipe clean. Always wear a mask and gloves. This addresses the visible growth but not the root cause. Given the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use, the mold might be a symptom of a larger issue. The moisture could be migrating from within the wall or ceiling void due to a hidden plumbing leak or insufficient insulation against the cold AC air. This is very common here. You should report it to building management. Under Dubai regulations, they are responsible for the structural integrity of the building and common systems, including potential leaks in adjacent apartments or within the walls. Provide them with a clear photo and a written description. A professional inspection with moisture meters is often needed to diagnose hidden dampness that DIY cleaning can't fix. If the problem persists after your cleaning efforts, this indicates a deeper issue they must investigate. |
