How to remove bathroom mold in humid Dubai weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I finally found the source – a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet where it meets the wall. It’s been so humid lately that the grout never seems to fully dry out. What’s the most effective way to kill the mold and stop it from coming back in this Dubai weather?

The most effective approach combines immediate removal with addressing the root cause of moisture, which is critical in Dubai's humidity.

For the patch behind the toilet, start by scrubbing the area with a dedicated mould remover or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (ensure proper ventilation). Thoroughly dry the area with a fan or hairdryer after cleaning. However, killing surface mould is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue persists. The constant high humidity, combined with condensation from cool bathroom surfaces and air conditioning, creates an ideal environment for regrowth.

To prevent it from returning, you must improve ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually venting outside, not just into the ceiling void. Wiping down wet walls and shower surfaces squeegees away standing water. A portable dehumidifier can significantly reduce ambient moisture levels in the room, making it harder for mould to establish itself. For persistent problems, regrouting with a high-quality, mould-resistant sealant may be necessary to create a more durable barrier.

If the mould covers a large area (typically more than one square meter), has a persistent musty odour despite cleaning, or if you suspect it has spread behind tiles or into drywall, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and, if needed, take samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation strategy.
